작가노트
I explore and unravel my interest in the emotionally-formed social relations of others through my artwork. I try to express and analyses of our social relations including myself.
In our relationships with others, we wear different masks, depending on social situations to create smoother, more harmonious relations. Once we wear our mask, we try to change from our superficial appearance in accordance to the desires of the individual, the others, and the community, as well as our concealed identity. The ‘Wearing maskup’ series uses a ‘makeup’ analogy to show the diversity
of social masks, and how individual and the other endeavour to change themselves.
Unlike ‘Wearing maskup’, the individuals in the ‘Unconscious people’ series use masks to unconsciously assimilate the group consciousness. As he maintains his relationship with the group, the individual pass the move expected by the group, and must find his hidden masks that better suit the situation.
As the individuals are aware of the way other people are looking at them, they may feel afraid of the gaze of the other. The ‘Self-portrait’ series simultaneously expresses the social anxiety we may feel when someone gazes at us and the fear I feel as the artist when the viewer looks at my work.
In this context, the scope of social interaction grows wider through the perpetual development of our social networks and especially in the digital world we live in. More importantly, many people may be losing their true selves or experiencing confusion about their identity because of projection of the consciousness of others.
In the series ‘You were not there’ and ‘Lost’ I tried to show the identity crisis and the disappearance of identity that many contemporary people go through. Also, due to the burden of social relations, some people want to disconnect from the outside world. In the ‘Tent’ series, I try to express the isolation felt many times by the contemporary individual.
As a member of society, I try to explore the characteristics of the group, society, even the world, that an individual is part of, and shed new light on social phenomena. As an artist, I aim to express my projected subject of the contemporary person’s image to elicit the viewer’s sympathy and communicate with them.
