First an egg, then a caterpillar, then a chrysalis, and finally an adult butterfly. My work appropriates this life cycle of a butterfly to portray the significance of human life. The ideas of Resurrection in Christian theology and Reincarnation in Buddhist doctrine demonstrate how humans have rejected the fact that we only get one shot at life, and rely on religious power to promise ourselves the next life. My paintings employ the shape of butterflies combined with a lyrical sentiment of colors, and such colorful scheme has become my distinct style of expression. The butterfly as a subject matter is neither a realistic representation nor an abstract figuration, but a unique visual language from my point of view. The image of butterflies which has been highlighted with internal light presents the moments between the real and the abstract, and life and imagination. The blank spaces on the screen is intended to offer a room for a restful life. My early works were about the process of “filling,” with rich and hopeful elements, but my recent works suggest more about the aesthetics of “emptying” by engaging blank spaces. The process of “emptying” is translated into an artistic visual imagery while generating internal colors within my mind, and this experience saturates the canvas in an intense sentimentality. The image of butterflies which I initially obtained from nature represents my ego and speaks for my life. The blank space of the background looks monotone, but in fact it is a soft mixture of multiple colors achieved by layering of paints, and it projects a sense of comfort and abundance. The stenciled flowers that often appear in the scene implicate human lives. The center of the butterflies symbolizes my ego, and the flowers illustrate my communication with the surroundings. Furthermore, each wing of the butterflies is embellished with various emotions, proposing new themes of life. Lastly, I wish to suggest through my butterfly paintings that hope and passion are the most crucial elements in human mind, composure, and creativity.
