We continuously perceive and judge what we face in our daily lives. This process may often be unrecognized, thus it can be distorted through our own bias and prejudice. Especially the perception of visual images tends to be dominated by preceding personal experiences or knowledge, and the differing interpretations may lead to the corruption of the essence. My work focuses on this psychological aspect of judgments and aims to establish a pictorial illusion through simple visual language. The primary objective lies in creating an optical illusion in which the flat surface of the canvas looks crumpled. The perpendicular stripes that fill the screen look crumpled, but one can easily suppose that they are straight vertical lines of identical width. The contradiction between vertical stripes and crumpled effect forms a mutual relationship, as each line’s solid color extends into numerous shades along the crumples. Black lines in particular effectively express the reflection of light, and by deliberately mingling the white of background with the white reflection over the black lines, I attempt to display my secondary objective of disclosing our bias within the psychological judgment process. The vertical stripes used here are not only a convincing means of expressing the crumpled surface, but also a critical comment on the distortion of truth, as they represent the universal truth of gravity. In other words, the crumpled stripes emphasize the significance of the absolute value by challenging it through optical illusion. The first pictorial illusion occurs when the viewer considers that the screen is originally a crumpled surface. Then the second illusion comes about when the viewer recognizes the conflict between the actual materiality and the elaborately reproduced image in oil paints. Although the pictorial illusion might be seen as fictitious, identification of the truth always begins with an image.
