The world of art generally seems to indicate reality, but eventually it is only a virtual reality reproduced on a two-dimensional plane. The aesthetic pleasure, one of the greatest purposes for artmaking, is ultimately an intentional self-deception or ‘illusion’. My hyper-realistic painting is also on ‘the boundary of fantasy’ based on optical illusion.
While my past works had been dealing with fictional figures based on the reproduction of fixed images from photographs, my later series of takes a more spontaneous approach to the inflection of forms based on an invisible boundary. This process is an active re-creation of forms in a conscious state of illusion.
The latest series exhibits the illusion based on a more concretized boundary. The simple-shaped dice is first disintegrated and then reassembled along the invisible boundaries, and the primary colors(red, yellow, blue) also take forms over the black background. The work is completed by positioning the shadows of the newly created forms onto the black background, thereby adding another dimension of illusional space between the floating forms and the canvas. In other words, this series is about creating an illusion by integrating the boundaries of form, color, and emptiness, making the transition from the real to the virtual.
