작가노트
The landscape that vanishes, the landscape we live in.
The memory of a vanishing place is stored within one’s mind, and it often recurs when one returns to the place. That is what I attempt to retain in my painting.
I enter my neighborhood, stand before the staircase, and gaze at my home far up at the top. That is my hometown landscape. Inside the landscape I see the back of my father coming back home from a weary journey, as well as the scenes I encounter from inside the car during rush hours. Every moment is imprinted like an afterimage of a memory. With the story of my own, the memory becomes a reminiscence.
All my work is undertaken with Korean ink, spoiled brushes, squeegees and rollers, since the materials well convey the dim atmosphere of a monotonous photograph, with a touch of Korean sensibility.
I visit the areas under re-development, and travel through the vanishing shanty town, sketching and taking photos of the streets and houses. I also capture the cityscape at the red signal on the way of driving back and forth. The red signal to me is not a stop sign, but a sign of hope, awaiting the green light.
Memories remain as faint afterimages, and yet the path ahead of me is full of hopeful reminiscence.
