My paintings are said to be surrealistic, but not in terms of the ‘dépaysement’ technique observed in most surrealist paintings. They rather consist of my own style of minimal composition with artificial stone walls, animals and plants, dolls, photographs and objects, to create stories in imaginary and unreal spaces. These stories replace my situations, dreams and metaphors. I started my work from a story that I believed I could control with my own will, but consequently I discovered a surreal world that I had never imagined. Surrealism attracts us to the world of unconsciousness, to seek for the true nature beyond reality.
The stories within my paintings are about my desire to run and fly toward my dreams as well as the love for my family. In Kenzaburō Ōe’s novel [A Personal Matter], the main character Bird is trapped in a harsh reality and believes that Africa, which he has long dreamed of, is far away. I thought so as well, but the key to heaven on Earth was to be found in the family and home. I hope that these stories are not just of my own, but also of all the viewers of my work.
