Can emotions be consumed and persist at the same time? Some emotions linger on, and I cannot predict if that period will end shortly or after a while. However, I can assure that ‘memories’ frequently involve emotions. While the flow of emotions is invisible, the following internal change leads to noticeable exterior changes. I have focused primarily on the emotion that stems from a memory. During the process, I discovered that the emotions associated with memories originate from ‘relationships’. I closely examined the unfavorable memories and feelings that are consistently conjured from my unconsciousness, and then came up with some attributes of relationship: mutable, unstable, fragile and delicate. The collision between a broken relationship and persisting memory about it often drains me and seems to reveal my dormant aggressiveness. In the past, I frequently sank with depressing ideas about relationships. Therefore I was skeptical of every relationship and struggled to maintain the psychological distance with others. Nevertheless, the unfavorable memories and emotions I tried so hard to get away from kept seeping into the tiny crevices of my daily life. The more I tried to conceal them, the clearer they appeared. It was something beyond my control. So now, instead of making painful efforts for mental recovery, I try to relax and go with the flow. My current paintings still talk about memories, emotions, and relationships, but in a quite different manner. Now I understand that every time a memory is evoked from all the way down the past, it subtly faints and blurs, and also that particular emotion at the moment is only temporary. Even when I paint about the same subject and imagery as in the past, I can take a lighter and relaxed approach. I hope my paintings envelop the audience with unfamiliar sensations, unfolding an open space for new interpretations. I also wish that we all stay strong amidst all the uncertainty and ambiguity.
