작가노트
My work captures the ‘psychology of repetition and imitation’ through the ‘parrot-head’ figures. Whether willingly or not, modern people take on roles and characters to be recognized by others, just like an actor on stage.
The parrots in the paintings symbolize the imitative thoughts and behaviors of modern people who live through the inundation of media and information. We all wish to break from the outdated convention of imitation, but we also know that it is troublesome to get over the comfort zone.
Living in the city, nature is limited to parks in the neighborhoods. Among the forest of buildings, parks function as a shelter for weary mind and body, but on the other hand, the boundary of the only nature seems to confine us.
Ironically, humans feel more comfortable when they are given a limited range of performance. The wider it gets, the more anxious we become due to increasing desires. It is always on us to decide whether to be content with the status quo, or to overcome reality, or to overturn all limitations. In that sense, the opposite of anxiety might be awakening, not stability, and the awakening starts with reflecting on oneself.
The parrot humans in my work prepare for the morning glory and look for their own treasure as if they were on a journey. They look just like ourselves. Life is about repetition, and humor is a gift bestowed only upon humans to live through such repetition. Humor allows us to embrace unstable reality and advance towards the ideals. Humor also guides our strenuous life to awakening and realization, and simplifies our everyday life so that we can maximize the joy of life.
Life is a journey. We are never told the place of departure and arrival. We are never told when to achieve the life we desire. It is our part to figure it out.
