[Illuminating the faded memories] My work sheds light on the fading existence of myself and ourselves, in the form of a ‘house’ that embraces the childhood memories of playing with friends. The paintings are grouped into two different series, categorized by the palettes of colors and materials. The reproduced memories on the canvas guide us to our childhood reflections. The ‘daytime story’ series portrays the beauty of light and iridescent hues, and the ‘nighttime story’ series exhibits the magical ambiance of moonlit scenery. ‘Daytime story’ features the pouring sunlight that veils the houses and fields with a blanket of glitters. The use of charming but unconventional colors conjures up a blurred memory, and suggests a positive future. ‘Jongseok’s House in Dosan’ in front of a small pine forest continuously poured out refreshing scents whenever my friends and I played hide-and-seek. When the cropping season was done, we could occupy the plowing machine resting in the yard. Our only goal was to be ‘the most excited’ in the world. The common elements in the paintings - houses, plowing machines, pine trees, hanging bundles of garlic, etc. - constitute my artist’s archive of reminiscence. The blank space is intended for the audience to fill with their own memories; it is a link between the artist and the audience. In the ‘nighttime story’ paintings, the luminous moonlight carefully and delicately diffuses through the canvas. Along with the painstaking repetition of filling up and then scraping off the strokes of charcoal, the moonlight gradually saturates the screen. It dismisses temporality, obscuring the border between the real and the unreal(memories). Surrounded by the clouds and smokes featured in the paintings, we can leap from the present to the past, and return to the most brilliant moments of our lives. I believe that my visualization of reminiscence may convey solace, cure, and positive messages to the viewers.
