The Ocean of Whales I realized that the vast ocean is no longer a safe haven for whales. I started this series of work with the hope that the whales could take flight from all human influence and live freely in the boundless sky. I have been frequently asked questions on why paint whales, what meanings do they have, and if they involve any environmental implication. The answer to this is yes, but not always. First of all, I am tremendously interested in environmental issues, and try to protect the environment as much as possible. However, that is not the only reason to paint whales. Whales are unique animals that are mammals but fully aquatic. They are social creatures that often live in groups, and exercise shared parenting if necessary. They are the largest known animal on earth. Their existence and traits are remarkable and attractive. Therefore I didn't want to confine them in the extent of the waters, and I turned the sky into the ocean of whales. Whales exist not because the ocean bears them; where they exist becomes the ocean. Humans persistently dream and aspire. However, false ambition can lead to the neglect of the value of other creatures, often destroying them. On that account, the immense ocean is not always a peaceful shelter for whales. So I camouflaged the whales with the clouds, hoping that they won’t be seen inadvertently. Perhaps, the life that is liberating only with camouflage, may not only about whales.
