Humans desire order and unification, pursuing a perfect and ideal state. In the man-made ecosystem, perfection and structure signify beauty and power. However, in the state of desire, creation always accompanies destruction. Beauty is ephemeral. Even something complete disintegrates, and things continue to be fragmented and then reconstructed. We consistently run toward the ultimate satisfaction and completeness, but what’s waiting at the finishing line might be different from the utopia we pursue. The scenery in my work is a chaotic collage of artificial nature and the debris from dismantled places. In an attempt to express the artificial and conflicting atmosphere, I integrated figurative portrayals of existing landscapes with rough brushstrokes and the texture of thick paints. Also, the depiction of shades and shadows amplifies the effect of the layering of flat surfaces.
