My childhood was filled with delightful events. My friends and I looked for different amusements every single day. However, newness soon became familiar, and the dramatic life that we see in movies and TV shows seemed too far away from real life. Only a few people manage to live such dramatic life(or at least dream of), but most of us carry on with ordinary daily life. My work investigates the traits of the age we live in and the nature of daily life. What's the value of “daily life”, which seems to be dull and unremarkable? From some point, I began to assume a spectator’s viewpoint to concern about what we are all going through, and pay attention to what’s happening in front of me. I have discovered that within the daily routine of each individual’s everyday life, is a symbol of time and culture accumulated by mankind. The daily life of a pensive old man becomes philosophy, and the sight of a pile of outdated objects invites us to reflect on the passage of time. The scene of sacred images mingled with industrial products narrates the demotion of absolute value, and the antiquated statues from Eastern mythology reveals the current status of tradition that has surrendered to westernization. By employing the images of antiques from an individual’s daily life in the past, I attempt to reexamine the meaning and value of daily life. My two-dimensional painting mainly features ‘daily scenes’ and ‘antiques’. The representation of the subjects through elaborate portrayal eventually leads to the specified joy of yielding, instead of the abstracted pleasure of consuming. I aim to capture and collect the rich colors of daily life, thereby inviting the viewer to appreciate reality as well as ordinary life. Among the vast realm of contemporary art practice, I adopted two-dimensional painting which the great masters in art history struggled to establish their entire lives. Some people might call this a retrogression of practice, but I would identify this as a recurrence of expression. Just as every individual has one’s own appearance and voice, the colors and strokes used in a painting are marked by one’s personality. Starting with the belief that the most ordinary can often become the most extraordinary, I hope to settle my own oeuvre of visual possibilities through the accumulation of each single piece of work, just like the old masters did.
