What does the painter draw? How much work is available to humans, and how is the artist's life reflected in his work? The reason why these original questions became a hot topic is when I look into the life and works of the artist Oh Heung-gu. Born in the valley of Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon-si(city), Oh Heung-gu, artist, when he was five years old, spent his childhood under his mother. Born in 1941, four years before liberation from the Japanese colonial rule, a young boy under ten years old had to undergo the tough national trials until the US military and the Korean War. According to the memory of the neighbors, a young Oh Heung-gu was very clever, very dexterous, and rich in emotion.You may be wondering how hard his young mother’s life with him was because his father died then. How severe was the hardship of his young mother in trying to raise up a poor child? Oh Heung-gu, the “good son,” would have always promised to repay his mother's hardships, and this kind of heart would have made him delicate and considerate. After studying hard, he was able to graduate from the Teacher's School, and by the time he started his career as a teacher, he resumed his paintings. He had already won prizes at various art competitions since childhood. His passion for painting was his love for his mother, so he was always condensed in his heart. In 1970, he devoted himself to full-fledged works and bursting with energy as an artist. He opened his first solo exhibition in 1976. At that time, the style of his works was a very academic, and he still hates to add intricate concepts to his work, sometimes even thorough conception, and sometimes even without regard to form, to the excluded abstract work of form. The expression style is decided according to the inner inspiration, and it does not distinguish concreteness from abstraction. However, it is lyricism that is common to his works regardless of the form of the works. The sentiment of his hometown, the sentiment of his mother who raised him, is the driving force for him to live as a painter. Oh Heung-gu, a lyrical painter, opens an exhibition that memorizes and arranges 50 years as a painter in his eightieth year.The works of artist Oh Heung-gu are very diverse. Sometimes a woman who is in agony appears in his work while drawing a beautiful view of nature, or sometimes a memory play with his companions, or a mother in memory appears. It is the mother who is still clerical to him who is eighty years old, and is the hometown that he misses. Let's look at the works of 2001 (No. 4) and 2003 (No. 30). These works are also portraits of his mother, who has grown in his heart. This work in the form of Cubism is rich in deep solitude and loneliness, and the image of the oppressed woman is well represented. Let's talk about some of the other works as the story of the works has already appeared.
1985 (No 50) is an oil painting on a canvas. In this work People who fly kites on low ridges, play samulnori, swim in the water, catch fish, and swing on the village yard appear. In the new road there are people who ride a country bus, and pictures of concentric children, roaring chickens, flock of geese in the sky, and other stringed instruments, like the village of Chagall. This work, which is covered by clouds or mountains, surrounds the village and people, is one of the most beautiful and the best works of the artist Oh Heung-gu. In 1991, Children Outside Dong-gu was No. 20 oil painting. Reminiscent of the New Year's morning, children are hurled in the background of a rounded garden. The legendary bird guarding the village is watching them, the balloon of hope rises to the sky, and the stream in front of the village flows through the ice. The unbound and unblocked village children are at peace. The screens seem to have been dismantled into their own sides, but contain a clear message. It's an amazing harmony. In the works of Oh Heung-gu, such a cube form appears frequently, and this form of dismantling objects or images is more similar to that of George B. Brauc than that of Picasso. However, the ambience of the color of the entire screen and the unique composition of the artist's experience are infused with the originality. Then, in what cases does the artist adopt the form of cubism, and in what cases, does he adopt the more formal form of artwork? Presumably, the artist seems to be faithful to the inspiration at the time when the composition to express is formed. If you want to portray yourself in a landscape or a thing, you can stick to the facts, and if you think about a situation, you choose a stereotype that combines and disassembles many memories. With these points, the artist's style may seem very diverse, but when you looks into it slowly and deeply, you may recognize there is a consistency connecting the gap. For example, even a touch of a conception work gives the feeling that the sun is broken into pieces. It can be seen that this is related to the cubic form of expression. Also, in the style of cubism, you can see that you prefer to use the gradation soft touch that is common in the form of figurative art. This is due to the artist's unbridled freedom, lyricism expressing childhood memories and a warm heart toward his mother.His work and life's journey reminds me of a salmon running through the river in search of Mocheon(the mother river). Like the life of salmon, he stands today, enduring eighty years. He wanted to meet his mother and listen to praise. Human beings today assume that there is "survival but no contribution." But salmon's life gives up its survival for its contribution. Is it so difficult to live like a salmon or a generous tree? Oh Heung-gu as a a painter of fifty years' experience wants to share his eightieth anniversary with his friends who accompanied him through all his years. I'm grateful not only for all his friends who have joined him, but also for his beautiful mind to share his Seoul exhibition with his friends.
