작가노트
Blue for Boys, Pink for Girls
Pink, is a well-known color to be determining gender in this society we belong to. In modern society, we submit to gender stereotypes in which pink stands for women, and blue stands for men. What is worse about this social error is that a male inclined to anything pink is often sneered at for being feminine, and even homosexual. If we do not choose to follow the major, we may be the victim of fierce condemnation from unfriendly neighbors.
Until the 18th century pink was exclusively within men’s domain since it was a variation of red, the bloody symbol of power and authority. In the paintings from the medieval age or the Renaissance, the kings and royal families in elegant postures are often described as wearing pink, while most other females are wearing blue, the symbolic color of the Virgin Mary. Pink began to be called ‘pink’ only after the 19th century, and before that, it was ‘rosa’ which was made by mixing a tinge of white to red to portray the fine blush on the character’s face. However from the late 18th century, after the Industrial Revolution, society revolutionized and re-fashioned art and literature. Pink became one of the greatest changes in definition during this transition in art and literature. Then throughout the settlement of Romanticism in the 19th century, it was remodeled into the color we all know; the general term for softness, femininity and sweetness.
