Sungsu Park’s paintings clearly show the subjects with obvious behaviors, yet it’s rather difficult to depart from that somewhat apparent question: “So what is the narrative?” This probably occurs because of, ironically, the particularity of the figures in the painting. The series of actions assumed by the apparent figures guides to the quest for an unknown narrative beyond the realm of canvas, thereby increasing a sense of ambiguity, directly proportional to its vividness. The ambiguity, perhaps, might intend to suspend our habit of being quickly engulfed in an artwork’s excessively vivid colors and forms as well as such of our quick dismissal from it.
The series of displays the artist’s extensive thoughts on specific figures that stand out in their own existence without any background. At such surrealistic moments where an object, landscape or a space overlaps with a different one, the figures become the subjects of a strong transformation. Her work attempts to expand into another time and space, and at times demonstrates its magical power of revitalizing the faded memories from the past with vibrant colors and forms. The graphic figures that fill the surface like illustrations in storybooks provide a sense of clarity, while the complicated narratives and the unclear time and space beyond the canvas envelop the viewer with uncertainty.
