The world consists of ‘datum’ and ‘factum’.
My past works illustrate the world we have established. I assumed that our desire and expectation for a better future created the landscapes we live in.
In my recent works, I removed all that we created, the factum, from the landscapes. What will the landscape look like without every iconic image of human desire and expectation?
After I decided to be a full-time artist, I realized that I had to give up living a normal life and abandon many things. Such of my own choice accompanied the sense of loss, deprivation, and hollowness. The contemporary issues seemed irrelevant to me, and therefore I took an unworldly view of perceiving the world as an outside observer. However, simultaneously, I strongly yearned for that world in front of me. After all, my altered attitude was the result of an unaccomplished desire. In my work, the feelings of emptiness and loss are translated onto the canvas through the act of partial removal of images so that the resulting blank space, the space of ‘factum’, fully reveals its presence.
