“Nam-Pyo Kim, a Surrealist Artist: Deep Aestheticism Captured in the Illusional Phenomena”
The work of Nam-pyo Kim is well identified with its surrealistic compositions which explore the aspects of human society and the structure of nature. Kim’s profound world of art reveals the intersection of modernity and the contemporary, and that of nature and civilization. His matter of concern lies not only in “what and how” to paint, but also in “why” make art.
Employing the notion of “Time,” the artist has been consistently investigating his purpose of artmaking. His work consists of the threads of time and space that intertwine natural landscape with the symbols of the modern mechanical civilization and the present with the past. Beyond impressive and intriguing, such convoluted configuration invites the viewer to raise the question: “why” did the artist paint them? For Kim, the relationship between nature and modern civilization is a device that intensifies the painting that might otherwise be considered simply “entertaining”, and the theme of nature offers room for reflection on the downsides of human civilization. Through such means, Kim aims to share his unfathomable world of art and unfurl the spectacles of immeasurable modern-day phenomena on the canvas.
