The series of painting on bottari, a tied bundle made of fabric, evolves from the landscape of areas under New Town Development.
Due to the New Town Plan or large-scale redevelopment that began to flourish in the early 1990s in Korea, many inhabitants of those regions were forced to leave their homes. The stories of those who carried out the redevelopment projects are well portrayed in records of ‘history’, but ironically, the stories of those who had to leave are hardly found. Each of their own story, the ‘he story’, consisting of so many affairs, joys and sorrows, fades away without even being recognized. My bottari pieces envelop the story of each individual as well as the layers of their memories and vanishing landscapes.
Throughout our lives, we are consistently challenged with unwanted experiences that might leave us in pain, and I sometimes wonder if I am living under someone’s dramatic scenario. In this sense, I hope that even painful stories could be fixed into more pleasant ones through my paintings of bottari, and that we find hope in all kinds of stories we see, feel and experience
