Paint, along with paintbrush and canvas, is both the most fundamental and essential ingredient in a painting. Particularly in two-dimensional painting, paint plays a key role with its shape and color, thickness and texture.
My current series of work accentuates the significance of the role of its materiality in a painting. It also draws attention to the relationship between the painted figure of paint and some objects(stone, coin, flower, etc.), a representation of the phenomenon which occurs as the distinct physical properties collide or come in contact with one another.
The "trace" consists of the color of the paint the action of which an object has run past the paint. The collision of different properties with differing hardness and mass is indicated by the movement of stones, flowers, and coins. It seems apparent that the object has been dragged over the paint from left to right, and the trace from the movement in the form of scraped paint may indicate a pause, while it may also suggest that it’s neither in action nor in pause.
The resulting trace may be recognized as the past, but the physical collision indicates the present, so it is a moment between the past and the future.
The objects and the materiality of paints affect each other as they move in various directions showing the condensation of the energy within layers of paints. The condensed energy functions as a device that offsets the speed and force as in the principle of action and reaction, balancing the tension and energy back to the original state.
The viewer can take a bird’s-eye view of the subject matter and the shape is portrayed with shadow. When the canvas is hung on the wall, it seems like the painting to feel the heavy mass and weight stones attached to the painting's viscosity and gravity when hung on the wall. This allows the viewer to focus on the phenomenon that transcends gravity, the principles of force and speed, time and space.
The canvas features formative beauty as well as proportional and balanced composition, but what the work truly signifies is focusing on the present moment, not being affected by any external conditions. the traces the paint and the objects have made, we will be able to face the passage of time as well as the intersection of ideal and reality.
