This is a series of ‘Matter of Space’, which I have been working on since 2015.
While exploring and experimenting with the texture of the paint, I discovered that the protruding lump of paint expands onto the space. The sense of volume of the paint itself turns into an object consisting of the materiality of oil paint.
Early abstract paintings were about the substance and materiality of paints rather than the representation of subjects. Besides, my mother once visited my studio and protested, “These are just lumps of paints, not paintings!” This is where I started a full-fledged study on the nature of paints. In my third solo exhibition, I introduced the ‘Matter of Space’ series as the essence of abstract art.
In the manner of an abstract expressionist, I attempt to accentuate the sense of space occupying the lumps of paint, and balance out the cohesive energy throughout the canvas.
